CAMP MEETING AT CHANUTE

The present-day Chanute Community Church was near the site of a Camp Meeting attended by Champ Ferguson. The Evans Brothers who had some issues with Champ over a livestock transaction and were accompanied by Deputy Sheriff James Reed, attempted to arrest Champ. In the ensuing fight, Ferguson killed Deputy Reed and severely injured Floyd Evans before he was arrested and taken to the Jamestown jail. It was from this arrest that Champ Ferguson joined the Confederacy in return for having his charges dropped.
